So my Tacoma paint project has already exceed all of my household's expectations and I'm at a point where I have the method down all I have to do is follow through. But my dad thinks I'll hate driving a truck with such a flashy paint job. The more I think of it the more I agree. All I have to do is just sand it all down again and paint it all a uniform cover. I want to do the Rustolium dark green. I could also just do the whole thing red although the door jambs are already white and the hood is 4 coats in. What do you guys think?
orifinal plan:
Current state:
What what I what I started with:
Where do I go now? I still will have this livery someday but a daily driver (starting this summer) needs to be less conspicuous.

Don't you back out on me now goddammit

How are you applying the paint?

DO THE RACE TRUCK! You won't regret it. I love driving my Trans Am that has excessive graphics. Flashy cars aren't something you see every day and your Taco will never really attract any unwanted attention (cops) because it is still a small truck

Rollers.

It's still an option. I've just always liked dark green paint. And my graphics might actually look horrible sprayed on.

A darker color might show imperfections a bit too easily.
What primer did you use?

Get colored vinyl, you can certainly find cheaper: http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-x-10-Ft…

Just regular white primer. The bed only has one coat of paint in that picture. It needs 5 or 6 for full coverage. The body is primered in the picture too. The hood currently has 4 coats and was my proof of concept.

That's very thick paint! Are you thinning it at all? Did you level the primer? I know it's a backyard job but it's extra steps, not extra money.

You've already got the red laid down, so..
Marlboro livery is the answer

I sanded the primer if that's what leveling is. It's a 50/50 paint thinner mix. You cant see it in the picture that well but you can see the variation in the primer through the red paint. It's not that thick thinned out. Pours like water.

I don't feel like we have the whole story here...
Why do you think your DD "needs" to be less conspicuous?
Why do you think you'll dislike driving a truck with a flashy paint job?
Is there a hidden concern that you're spending too much time on the project, that it's having a negative impact elsewhere in your life (homework, job, etc)? Are your parents tired of giving you money for it?
I think it's a fun project and it's exciting that you have this opportunity. I say you follow through and see how it feels when you're done.

It has only cost ME (this is something I'm proud of) about $60 in supplies so far. It certainly has been fun but I plan on keeping this in a college parking garage and having it stick out so much might not be the best thing.
I also don't think my masking skills could adequately replicate the graphics and it will just look bad.
And I can write this off as a learning experience. I can use the skills learned getting this far towards making the solid color even better.

Damn you.

With the bed already being covered red, if you don't wanna do the graphics I'd just paint the whole damn thing red. Seems like the simplest solution and not too too flashy.

It's certainly the easiest option but the red on there is only a single thin coat at this point. Might as well do it so I'm happy with it and get a rich dark green. I just have some sanding ahead of me.

Cover them in mud.
Problem solved.

you are doing rustoleum and it cost $60 and you are worried about banging it up? or being to conspicious?
the paint job you have planned is awesome and would look awesome! just do it. Or buy some vinyl and do the graphics in vinyl and you wouldnt need much and it reversible and should be cheap. But I dont get why having a dope paint job that gets attention would be a bad thing.

Don't chicken out, go for the livery!

If Back to the Future has taught me anything, if somebody calls me chicken for not doing something it's probably a bad idea.
I need more mature paint to offset any inmature driving I have to do.

I'm not worried about banging it up. I didn't even fill in the dents.
It's also a desert paint scheme and I live in deciduous forests. That's my weakest argument yet.
I guess I just want to be an adult about this and have paint that conforms to what is expected by society. Now that I write that I want to do the racy one. I'm still in the air about it.

Good for you!
I don't think that having a fancy paint job will make your truck more or less likely to be vandalized or stolen on campus. It may, however, be a good conversation starter with other car/truck people, and maybe even with some cute art students - who knows, right?! :)
Don't worry about the masking skills - measure twice and cut once, as they say. Take your time and it'll turn out just fine. And if it doesn't turn out to your liking, how long will it take you to just roll on a bit of red to cover it all up?

BAWK! Buk buk buk buk-awk!
Seriously, it's your ride, so do what feels best. But the Walker Evans livery is too cool to pass up on.

Cannot star this enough. That's how no one sees my slightly-off-colour patchwork paint
